John Schoonraad is a life cast and special effects artist who has more than 2000 life casts under his belt throughout his 30 year career.  John came to tutor at the Iver Academy this week and we put some questions to him.

How did you get into SFX?       Long story.  Just the love of it really and being lucky.  I started off as a mould maker which is the keystone most makeup/SFX.

Best thing about it?                 The learning and fun.  The people and problem solving.  Travelling and of course seeing it all on the big screen afterwards.

Who have you worked with?    Almost every movie star you can shake a stick at - Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Sir Ian McKellen, Steven Spielberg, Kate Winslet,   Sylvester Stallone, David Bowie.

Toughest challenge?                Probably running a big prosthetics department in a foreign country (Blackhawk Down) but it was very enjoyable.

Any tips/advice?                      Be yourself.  Work hard.  Keep an open mind.  Always be polite.

The future?                               The future is bright.  We are now venturing into new ground and i am enjoying the 3D scanning and printing which goes hand in hand with our practical FX.
